‘KERALA’ WAS ONCE KNOWN AS ‘KERALAM’ ‘KERA’
MEANS ‘CHERA PEOPLE’ AND ‘ALAM’
MEANS (LAND) LAND OF CHERA.
Kerala is the state in ‘South India’
and her beginning or birth of the state is documented
and recorded by the following sources. Greek,
Roman and Chinese writers provide some facts about
the long period between some undisclosed time
before Christ and the 9th century ad when the
First Chera Kingdom existed. After the 9th Century
ad more reliable information is available from
stone writings and copper plates, which replaced
palm leaves for writing. The oldest record about
Kerala is in a rock edict by ‘Emperor Asoka’
between BC272 and BC 232. There is geologist evidence
that Kerala was indeed under the sea at one point
of time, and it rose due to some seismic activity.
Another theory suggests that the enormous amount
of silt that the rivers of kerala deposit from
the hills to the sea is washed up to the shore.
There is some evidence of pre-historic man dwelling
in Kerala as a few man-made underground chambers
have also been found. The first solid evidence
of inhabitants in Kerala is by the findings of
‘Microlithic Artifacts’, which were
unearthed and recovered near calicut, dated to
4000 BC. Sree Visakham has research the origins
of Kerala, as to see the roots of her culture,
history, religious beliefs and the strict ‘Ayurvedic’
disciplines in her culinary preparation, making
and presentation of food dishes. We at ‘Sree
Visakham’ will not forget our past, as our
roots are in our every breath and thoughts. We
